Bronze and catastrophic plans can now pair with an HSA

Starting in 2026, bronze and catastrophic plans bought through the marketplace are treated as HSA-eligible, per IRS Notice 2026-5, so enrollees can contribute to an HSA even if the plan is not a traditional HDHP.

This matters most for self-employed people and early retirees on the marketplace: a bronze plan plus maxed HSA contributions can lower both taxes and total cost. Compare against silver plans, especially if your income qualifies for cost-sharing reductions (silver only).

Use the marketplace calculator with your bronze premium and the 2026 HSA limits.
