Is an HSA worth it?

For most people who can afford the deductible, yes: HSA contributions are tax-free going in, growing and coming out for medical costs, the money never expires and can be invested. It is not worth it if the HSA-eligible plan’s higher out-of-pocket costs outweigh the premium and tax savings for you.

  • Triple tax break: pre-tax contributions, tax-free growth, tax-free withdrawals for qualified medical expenses.
  • No use-it-or-lose-it (unlike an FSA). The account is yours if you change jobs.
  • After 65 you can withdraw for any purpose and pay only income tax, like a traditional IRA.
  • Downside: you pay more before the deductible. Keep enough cash or HSA balance to cover it.
