HSA catch-up contributions at 55

If you are 55 or older by the end of the year, you can add $1,000 on top of the regular HSA limit. The amount is set by law and is not indexed for inflation. A spouse who is also 55+ needs their own HSA to make their own catch-up.

  • 2027 total with catch-up: $5,500 self-only, $10,000 family (one eligible person).
  • Once you enroll in Medicare you can no longer contribute, and the limit is prorated for the months you were eligible.
  • Turn on “55+” in the calculator and it applies automatically.
